Module 5 Communication Task-Christine Miller

  1. Google Art Project (www.googleartproject.com)

Google Art Project is an amazing collection of virtual museums! You can look up art by collection, artist, or museum. You can also create your own gallery for specific lessons or units.  I love being able to zoom in to look closely at detail and the ability to make my own collection. We used this for a writing activity which focused on details and visualization and my students were extremely engaged!

2. Boom Writer (www.boomwriter.com)

I love this free, interactive writing tool! There are a variety of features that allow teachers to set clear learning objectives and guidelines. There are endless opportunities for collaborative writing projects for students, including narrative, informational, and project based writing. Your school will need to be be registered to access the free resource. My students were much more motivated to write with this tool over Google Docs, which we usually use.

3. Todays Meet (www.todaysmeet.com)

This is a great tool for class discussions. It was extremely easy to set up and use friendly. I had hoped that this tool would encourage some of my reluctant students to share their thoughts and ideas and it did! All of my students were engaged and excited to type their responses! During our first few tries, I projected the discussion happening with Apple TV and they were so excited to see the responses they were typing up on the screen! I’m thinking it will be a useful way for students who are absent to continue to participate in class discussions!

4. Storynory (www.storynory.com)

Storynory is an amazing collection of stories, classics, fairy tales, poems, etc. sorted by grade level and  orally read to students. Many of the stories have text to follow along. This tool has been such a positive addition to my literacy centers. Some of my struggling and reluctant readers love this tool because they get to listen to reading (in English accents) and follow along with text at their grade level. My students crave the quietness of being read to!

5. Fetch podcasts (pbskids.org/fetch/show/podcasts.html)
This was another podcast site I looked at to help my struggling and reluctant readers. There are a large variety of silly stories to listen to. The Fetch site also allows students to create their own account and play motivating games. There are parent and teacher resources available.

HLT: 1 Communication tool has no clear goal that encourages students to use any of Bloom’s skills beyond the first level.

This is such fun writing tool. My third graders beg to use it! It is free and requires no set up. Authors select the number of panels to use, choose from a variety of backgrounds/settings, and drag/pull characters and props to the background. Captions can be written under the illustrated panel or in speech bubbles. I have been using this tool for more than writing. It has been a useful way to help teach story elements (problem, solution, character development, setting, etc.). Many of my reluctant readers love graphic novels. This has been a great motivator for them to write their own!

HLT:  3 Communication tool has specific goal and one or more objectives that encourage students to use more than one of Bloom’s skills

This is an easy to use communication tool where multiple people can talk and share with one another live. We are the only school in our school district and the only third grade within the school. This tool will be a useful way for my students to collaborate and share with other third grade classrooms within our area or on neighboring islands. I also may use this as a means for my students to communicate and work with elderly community volunteers that often read with my students once a week. This would keep the reading communication going even if the roads are slippery, etc.

8.Be Funky: (www.befunky.com)
This is a great photography tool that allows students to manipulate photographs they take with iPads. The pictures literally become works of art that they can use in a variety of projects. Text can be added, as well. My students love to take pictures of themselves and their learning. This tool helps them consider which of their pictures help demonstrate their learning and the features of the tool help them zoom in on certain aspects of the picture. I’ve used this tool to make Learning Targets for the classroom using their pictures. They are very tuned into a Learning Target when there is an image of one of their classmates in the process of the intended learning!
