Today's Meet (TM) is a way for a teacher to create a chat room where students from a particular class (or even another school) can access the chat room and post information, questions, etc. TM promotes the use of "the Backchannel". The Backchannel is the conversation that goes on "outside" the typical classroom, but still has merit as a way of deepening the discussion at hand.
TM is particularly geared towards the "introverted" students in your class. Much like Twitter, there is an emphasis on brevity (140 character limit). Users are able to post URL's that can be accessed instantly.
TM allows the creator to invite as many participants as possible, and gives the teacher/creator many "controls" to make sure discussion is on topic and appropriate. TM would be a good tool to generate discussion on a certain topic "outside" normal meeting times.
