My Big Campus might be the most comprehensive online communication tool available to teachers currently. Students and teachers are able to interact and share all types of files and communicate in various ways.
Teachers can post assignments and have MBC keep track of the grading of these assignments. There are various private/public communication tools for teacher/student or student/student. MBC appears to have a very good IT privacy.
MBC does offer a free trial with an eventual fee attached to long term use.
